Historic Smithfield
The best example of colonial architecture west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, William Preston's Smithfield was constructed in 1774. It connects Washington, Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, revolution, secession, emancipation, and the Civil War to Southwest Virginia.

One of the best museums I've visited in Virginia this year! The staff were awesome and extremely knowledgable in the history of not only the Smithfield plantation but the families and locations around Smithfield that allows visitors to familiarize with the local region and other historical sites. The house was very nice and there are some original pieces that belonged to the Prestons. The tour takes about an hour but I extended mine to two because of how engaging the experience was and I absolutely plan to return to visit the other trails and events. An absolute must visit in Blacksburg and Montgomery County!
Oct 9, 2026 · Google ReviewWe came here for their Fourth of July event! It was great for families! They had crafts and petting zoo for the kids. Music and performance by the local theatre. We were able to tour the house that had very knowledgeable staff.
Jul 4, 2026 · Google ReviewWhile I was there the buildings were closed. Apparently they don’t open for routes til April. But the grounds are lovely, there are trails and informational signs so you can do a self guided tour outside. There is one trail that loops around the main bldg but does not connect to another trail, it would be nice if it did. But all in all a very nice place to visit and walk around.
