This is a super interesting hike with all sorts of native plants and critters. We took the red trail out to the overlook and then the yellow trail back to the car. The yellow trail was awesome with a nice way to get down to the creek to cool the toes and wade in the water. The trail itself is undulating with several small ups and downs but nothing too crazy. We are making plans to go back and also see the blue trail. We saw friendly deer and a couple of orange salamanders. Despite the drought, the trail was still fairly wet and there was water in the falls. Plan for wet feet. We also saw lots of black cohosh on the yellow trail as well as columbine. If you work up a hunger after the trail, go to the Treehouse Tavern, not far from the trailhead. A little pricey but delicious food and beverages.
Jul 11, 2026 · Google ReviewSecond highest waterfall in the state of Virginia. Peaceful walks. There are ground nesting birds at this location. Dogs must be leashed. Volunteers needed to trail monitor. Spring wildflowers galore! Hillsides of trillium, white, pink and burgundy. Beautiful when the mountain laurel bloom too! This is a preserve - open to the public. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking. Three trails several miles long for each. A hidden gem to be cherished and respected.
Apr 2, 2026 · Google ReviewNike hike. Thare are 3 different loops you can choose, I definitly recommend doing yellow trail which will take you down to the creek where you can dip your feet into cold and refreshing water. On the yellow trail you will also pass by small pond.
Apr 13, 2026 · Google ReviewWe decided to go for a Christmas Day hike at Bottom Creek Gorge. We really enjoyed getting out together and the view of the falls was even better with the foliage being down. The trails are well marked and easy to follow. At the waterfall viewing area, there are no railings and the terrain drops steeply into the gorge. It is very easy to stay safe, but keep an eye on the children here. Please note that dogs are not permitted at the preserve. It is a preserve for a variety of plant life and dogs will often mark along the trails with urine and sometimes feces. This can have a negative impact on the plant life in the preserve as it disrupts the natural pH of the soil. Thankfully, there are plenty of other dog friendly trails around the region where we can bring our furry friends. For this one though, let your doggo have a rest day at home.
Jan 2, 2026 · Google ReviewLovely, peaceful trail through the woods. We hiked the yellow loop which was labeled as 1.5 miles. Moderate, as there were some steeper sections but nothing too difficult or strenuous. We did not go to the falls overlook. Periodic water views from the creek. Easy parking and not too crowded.
